While we’re on the subject of childhood…

I was playing some Modern Warfare the other day, and my wife commented that there are so many buttons and toggles on the controller that she cant understand how I can play such a complicated game.
And I started thinking… the truth? She’s right! How the heck can I play such complicated games like they were second nature?
So I went to the source - Colecovision! That was the 1st console my father brought home for the family. I was extremely young at that time, but it was an introduction into gaming.
My real love for gaming came when my grandfather bought us an NES. I can still remember ripping open the box to play Super Mario.
Back then things were simple as heck! Up, Down, Left, Right and 2 buttons! What can be easier! And we had a blast.
Then came Super NES/Genesis which added more buttons, Nin 64 which introduced us to the analog stick, and PS2 with dual analog sticks.
They just kept adding buttons to make gaming better and more immersing for us gamers that grew up with gaming.
But what about new gamers? What about kids today that want to play but find the controls too complicated?
They weren’t eased into the next-gen controllers like we were with the simple NES controller. They’re expected to jump into something that we were trained to do at a much lower level.
Maybe this is one of the reasons Nintendo developed the Wii, instead of a super-power console. To bring everyone back to square one. Like the days of NES.
Granted, they did leave us hardcore gamers wanting alot more… but at the same time they are ensuring that gaming continues on much further than just the lifespan of us loyal gamers they created back in the 80’s.
So, essentially we have the best of both worlds today - Powerhouse consoles for the hardcore souls inside of us, and the back to basics console for playing some Wii-Sports with our kids.
Ah, the world is finally in balance!
